Is it a Trick or Treat?

When the doorbell rings the last week of October and nobody is there to greetyou, one has to wonder if there is going to be a trick or a treat. It was dark outside and I was surfing the web to find out the trick or treating hours for our City. We are expecting about 1000 trick or treaters; so I need to be prepared! Anyways ... the doorbell rang. My two-year-old and I went to answer the door and nobody was there. I was half expecting there to be a flaming bag of you know what on the sidewalk. (This actually happened to my Father-in-law) Instead, I found a bag of Halloween treats and a sweet but spooky note. What a nice surprise! Thank you to the neighbor out there who spread a bit of Halloween fun! Happy Halloween to all of you reading this post :)

Note: The pendant is by Misfitgirl on Etsy. I ordered a similar pendant a few years ago and hope to wear it this Halloween!

A Day with Thomas!

This past weekend, we traveled to Conway, NH to see Thomas the Train! David had so much fun! We went to see Sir Topham Hat, watched big screen Thomas videos, the gift shop, went for a train ride on one of Thomas' coaches, got tattoos of Percy and Thomas, and David's favorite, playing with all of the different trains. At first, I thought that there was not too much for the attraction; but when taking a 2-year-old, it was just right! David's Thomas tattoo has already vanished and he is sad that it is gone, but he still has his Percy! We will definitely go to see Thomas again. And, for anyone interested, tickets are discounted on Fridays :)

David's First Trip to the Movie Theater

Regel Cinemas host Free Family Film Festivals in the summer. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, select theaters host free films for families. When I heard about this festival, I thought that it was the perfect opportunity to take David to the movie theater for the first time. I was nervous about him sitting still for over an hour or running up and down the aisles during the movie! To my surprise, he sat on my lap glued to the silver screen for the entire 90 minute production of Horton Hears a Who. It was a wonderful first film to take him to see. I expect that we will try to go again this summer. Oh - and I was the only one to spill popcorn on the floor!

Knitting Fabric Strips - A Cabana Bag

If you have followed my blog, then you know that I recently completed a rag rug by crocheting strips of upcycled fabrics. After that project, I began crocheting baskets too. My latest crafting adventure is making a knit bag with strips of fabric. I hadn't knit in many years, bu tit brings back fond childhood memories. My cousin, who lived across the street from my grandmother taught me how to knit after school. It is fun to pick up a pair of knitting needles again. After the knit sections are complete, I will sew a liner and handles. Check back in to see the completed project!

Winter Thaw & Puddle Splashing

Now that my son is running around everywhere, I am experiencing the little things in life that I had not thought amusing since my own childhood. Except, now I am experiencing the fun and excitement through his eyes. Recently, the weather has hit the high 30's and low 40's during the day here which has started the winter thaw. Lots of melting snow has created puddles everywhere! My little guy loves nothing more than splashing in a puddle. The bigger the puddles the better! I can't wait until spring when we start seeing worms on the paved driveway .. that should be interesting!

My First Rag Quilt!

The photo above is the quilt before washing in the machine to wear the rag edges. I will post a picture of the finished quilt when I get a chance. But for now, I hope that you enjoy the work in progress. You can see that one side has the raggedy edges and the back side has nicely sewn seams.

I had some 10 inch squares of fabric in sweet baby designs that I could not decide what to make with. So, they were the perfect fabrics to make my first rag quilt. I started this project only a couple days ago and finished today! I am hooked! I love the look and it is so easy to assemble. For a great tutorial of how you too can make your own rag quilt, visit: Jen Yu's web page. Her directions are very easy. Even a novice sewer can complete this project! I decided to quilt lots of different designs in each block instead of quilting x's.

Rag Rug - Finally Finished!!

I started this project in August. First I made the fabric yarn using the slit method for joining the strips. I found that this method was least noticeable. Next, I started a long chain for the center of the oval shaped rug. It did turn out a bit longer than I had expected - but not by too much. The colors were picked, not by me, to represent water lilies. I hope that everyone has enjoyed seeing my progress on this project - I know that I enjoy going back through my blog and viewing the previous posts. To get a sense of the rug's size, it is shown on a full size quilt in the photo below.

Now I am hooked on rag items - I have already started a rag quilt and crocheted a couple of rag baskets!

Rag Rug Update - Only 2 colors left!

Only 2 more colors left. One method for going around the corners is to add and take away stitches as needed. I found that if the rug starts to turn up, then an extra stitch is needed. If the edge begins to "bubble up," then you would need to skip a stitch. These tips will help keep your rug flat. I used several different types of fabric making the rug as well. I found that when I used a thicker fabric, such as velour or home decor fabric, I had to skip a stitch here or there to keep the rug flat. I will have one final post so that you can see the finished rug!
